I bought the etrex Venture in October, 2008 to replace a 5 year old Garmin with it's screen that was distorted or partially blanked out. I was very happy with the Venture but about a year after having it, it would randomly shut itself off in the middle of the hike - even with brand new batteries. I just used it yesterday on a hike and couldn't get it to stay on beyond the initial Garmin screen. I tried different batteries with no success. I guess I'll have to go back to my old Garmin - at least when I tap the side just so, it's still a functional device.
